Superintendent asks School Building Authority for $5.52 million to replace middle-school HVAC; outlines driver-training stipend plan

The superintendent (S7) told the Braxton County Schools board on Nov. 4 that the district requested funding from the West Virginia School Building Authority to replace the middle school’s HVAC system. He said the total request was about $5.52 million and that engineers had described the work as possible to phase: roughly $2.5 million for Phase 1 and $3.0 million for Phase 2. The superintendent said a decision from the School Building Authority is expected around Dec. 15.
"When I went down today, I presented. I asked for the 5.5 million," the superintendent said, and noted the district would accept phased awards if full funding is not approved immediately.
The superintendent also described a proposed bus-driver training program in which the district would pay required training fees up front as stipends and establish an MOU with trainees; the approach is intended to lower barriers for prospective drivers while avoiding a requirement that the trainee commit to a fixed term of employment. The board asked the administration to prepare the program details and an MOU for future review.
Additionally, the superintendent outlined a proposed Braxton County Schools Community Involvement Service Award to recognize students and community members, and said the administration could host nomination forms online and use a scoring rubric for selection. Board members suggested formal approval at a future meeting.
Board members thanked the superintendent and staff for community partnership work and for advocating for School Building Authority support; the board did not take a vote on the SBA request during the meeting and awaits a funding decision from the authority.
