The Braxton County Schools board approved a set of personnel, contract and policy items during its Nov. 4 meeting.
The board approved the consent agenda, which included minutes from Oct. 21 and a long list of personnel recommendations: employment of Lisa Wanstreet as a Title I itinerant teacher and other professional and service hires; extracurricular resignations and coach appointments; and a set of volunteer and supervisory-aide approvals. The motion to approve the consent agenda was moved and seconded and carried by voice vote.
The board also approved contracts and administrative actions including:
- Awarding architectural services to McKinley Architecture & Engineering to support replacement of the middle school’s domestic water supply and related work under School Building Authority standards. - Approving a contract for speech services to address vacancies (named in the transcript as Lengua Pierrot Associates) for the 2025–26 school year; trustees discussed the district’s recruitment challenges and salary pressures. - Approving an agreement with IDEMIA Identity & Security for a permanent kiosk at the central office to process required background checks and fingerprints; presenters said the kiosk would operate at no cost to the district and speed processing. - Authorizing the superintendent to purchase a used van up to $65,000 with an expected ~90% state reimbursement to support CTE and student programs.
Several policy actions were finalized or advanced: the board repealed policy 25-11 (valedictorian/salutatorian selection) and policy 4000 (equal educational opportunity), citing redundancy or lack of currency with state and federal law. The board placed multiple policies on 20-day public comment, including proposed revisions to policy 23-35 (comprehensive statewide assessment), policy 3-800 (student teachers and pre-service educators), policy 40-60 (student arrival and dismissal procedures), and policy 41-20 (pregnant and parenting students). Trustees also moved a proposed revision of policy 44-10 (student automobile/vehicle use) to public comment after a discussion about permissible vehicle types.
All motions referenced above were carried by voice votes without recorded roll-call tallies in the transcript.
The chair then moved the meeting toward closing remarks and adjournment.
