Braxton County board approves major water-system grant, MOUs and multiple personnel and service contracts

The board approved a major improvement grant contract with the West Virginia School Building Authority for Braxton County Middle School water-system improvements totaling $418,840; the superintendent said the district will contribute $50,000 of board funds to complete the project.
Separately, the board approved a memorandum of understanding with West Virginia University Extension in the amount of $16,800 to continue extension programming in the coming year.
On personnel, the board accepted resignations and approved multiple hires and employment recommendations: Wayne Williams resigned as a sixth-grade teacher; recommended hires included Nathan Smarr (special education, elementary alternative education), Kristen Cox Moore (occupational therapist/behavior support interventionist), Emily White (first-grade teacher) and several paraprofessional and custodial hires. The board also approved leave requests and a number of extracurricular staff changes.
The board approved a set of service contracts for student supports: an agreement with Division of Vision Services for visually impaired instruction; a contract with Dr. Douglas Sturgeon for deaf/hard-of-hearing services (typically one half-day per month); and a contract with LinguaCare Associates for pediatric physical therapy services for the 2025–26 year (serving roughly 15 students). The board also approved a memorandum of understanding with the WVU Board of Governors for free hearing and vision screenings performed by WVU graduate students under supervision, described as a free service that eases the screening workload for district staff.
All of the above motions were made, seconded and approved by voice vote.
