Wahoo — The Wahoo City Council on May 12 directed city staff to draft an ordinance that would restrict certain registered sex offenders from living within 500 feet of a school or child-care facility after residents urged the council to act.
City Attorney Lausterer explained the city’s current municipal-code framework and outlined how enforcement of a change could work. Resident Chase Landry told the council he was asking the topic be considered and stated that the State of Nebraska has allowed municipalities to adopt such residency restrictions since 2006. Several other citizens spoke in favor of adopting a restriction, the council said.
The council did not vote on an ordinance at the meeting; instead, members indicated general support and asked staff to draft specific language for future consideration. Councilmembers discussed enforcement implications and requested that any proposed ordinance include details on how the city would determine compliance and respond to violations.
Next steps: staff will draft ordinance language and return it to the council for review and formal action on a future agenda.
