The Charles Town Tree Board agreed Aug. 1 to open sign-ups for a Kacapon Institute discounted tree program and to publicize the opportunity immediately to meet a tight ordering window.
Chair Aaron said the program offers 24–25 slots for property owners to buy trees at a 50% discount and that the board has a registration code for participants. He urged quick outreach because the ordering window is narrow: orders must be placed from Aug. 30 through Sept. 8 for fall delivery and planting later in October or November.
The board discussed whether to target disadvantaged neighborhoods or open the program broadly for this round. Members agreed to open the program to all residents to gauge interest and to use the town Facebook page, the city website and partner groups for promotion. Aaron said he would work with Virginia (city staff) to post social-media blasts and that a fall community workshop with Kacapon staff could pair training with tree pickups.
"We only have about 24 spots available," Aaron said, noting the short notice for the August–September ordering window and the benefit of pairing outreach with education and planting assistance.
Next steps: the board will post the registration code and program link on social media and the city website, consider a community training event in the fall with Kacapon staff, and compile an interest list to inform a spring round of purchases.
