Senior center installs gallery lighting, plans window tinting and notes national recognition

At the July 16 meeting, staff updated the commission on recent facility improvements, ongoing tweaks to climate controls, and multiple recognitions the center has received.

Staff said new spotlights were installed on the third-floor gallery in collaboration with the city manager's office and economic development coordinator, and that window tinting for Room 103 is planned to reduce south-facing heat and support climate goals. Commissioners and staff noted HVAC work has reduced sudden summertime temperature swings, though some afternoon humidity remains and contractors will continue adjustments.

Latasha DeLoach described several honors the center has received: an outstanding community partner award from the University of Iowa office of community engagement, a Better Together 2030 recognition for work with Johnson County food pantries, a national Modernizing Senior Center Innovation Award (tied to the Black Future Fest programming), and a historic preservation award visible near the building's sign. DeLoach said a press release was distributed and that she traveled to Washington, D.C., to accept one award; she also plans a webinar in October to review the Black Future Fest model.

Staff discussed enhancements to digital signage and interior wayfinding, and said interior design work will start in the fall with city design teams. The meeting also covered the medical lending library pilot: staff are arranging permanent housing for donated medical equipment at a North Liberty church, while transportation to that site may rely on Trail transit and volunteer help.

No binding funding decisions were made at the meeting; staff said they will return to the commission with further facility details and timelines as projects progress.
