The Bruneau-Grand View Joint School District board voted Aug. 12 to petition for District IV membership for the 2026-27 athletic cycle, leaving Rimrock in Division 1A. Trustee Allen Merrick moved to approve the petition and Trustee Steve Boren seconded; the motion passed unanimously.
Athletic Director Ashley Merrick and Jon Waterlander presented the district's options under IHSAA Rule 2-3 and recommended seeking transfer to District IV while remaining in Division 1A, noting comparable school sizes, a stable conference and moderately reasonable travel distances (an average reported at about 96 miles with a range of about 60 to 126 miles). Presenters contrasted that with the alternative of dropping into District III's Longpin league, which would increase travel distances and winter route risk, and the option to petition up to Division 2A to remain in District III with different trade-offs.
Trustees discussed timing and permanence of the change; Trustees Boren and Chairman Scott McNeley expressed support before the board approved the petition. The IHSAA petition deadline noted by presenters is Sept. 10, 2025.
