Discovery Elementary principal warns of morning congestion after Iona Road closed for widening project

D93 News reported that crews have closed Iona Road between Ammon Road and 45th East to replace two bridges and add sidewalks as part of a widening and safety-improvement project. The station said the work began Monday and is expected to continue through at least June 2026; the road will be closed to through traffic during that period.

Discovery Elementary’s principal, who was not named in the broadcast, told reporters the school has seen an increase in traffic because Ammon Road is now the only entrance. "We do have, an increased amount of traffic coming in from Ammon Road at this point because that's our only entrance," the principal said, noting about 10 buses and close to 200 cars arrive in the morning. He urged parents and drivers to allow extra time and to drive safely, saying neighborhood streets are narrow and many people park on the street.

The principal said representatives from the Road and Bridge department told him Goldenrod will be left open so north–south traffic can continue to reach Red Rock and Berkeley Park neighborhoods and residents can avoid making left turns onto Ammon Road. The station also reported the closure will last for the remainder of the school year and that through-traffic restrictions are expected to remain in place through at least June 2026.
