Superintendent reports improved attendance and FAFSA completion; board authorizes payment for two goals

Superintendent Wilson reviewed the district's three performance goals for the 2025'26 year and reported mixed results: the district narrowly missed its ACT growth target but exceeded goals for reducing chronic absenteeism and increasing FAFSA completion.
Wilson said the ACT benchmark was affected in part by changes to the test and that district performance remains above the state average despite falling slightly short of the stated +5 percentage-point target. "While I slightly fell short of the ACT score improvement goal, I'm proud of the outstanding work happening across Tempe Union," Wilson said.
On attendance, Wilson reported a 3.9 percentage-point reduction in chronic absenteeism, surpassing the 3% goal and reflecting a 16% relative improvement. He credited the district's attendance framework, early-identification strategies, dropout-prevention coordinators and a communication and intervention approach that targeted students by day, course, grade and subpopulation.
Wilson also said the district exceeded its FAFSA completion goal, reporting a 7.45 percentage-point increase and a 14% relative improvement after implementing MAPS (Making a Plan for Success) workshops, weekly monitoring, targeted outreach and on-campus completion events.
Following the presentation, the board voted unanimously to accept the superintendent's performance data for 2025'26 and to authorize payment for meeting goals 2 (attendance) and 3 (FAFSA completion). "I am thrilled to report on this one that this goal we exceeded," Wilson said of the FAFSA results.
Board members praised administrators and staff for the progress, requested follow-up on strategies used to address ACT changes and discussed continuing the MAPS work and attendance interventions into the coming year.
