Council authorizes removal of Shore Road kayak launch after engineering review

The Spring Lake Heights Borough Council voted Dec. 15 to authorize removal and appropriate disposition of the Shore Road kayak launch following a presentation of engineering findings that recommended removal.
Councilman John Casagrande summarized the engineering firm's conclusions and told the council the recommendation is to remove the launch “for now,” with the option to revisit the project in 2026 and consider improvements. On Dec. 15 the council adopted Resolution R2025-199 authorizing the Borough Administrator to facilitate removal and disposal; the resolution passed on a motion by Mr. Casagrande, seconded by Councilwoman Sara King, with ayes from Casagrande, Degnan-Spang, Graetz, King and Willms.
During public comment, residents who live on Shore Road thanked the council for engaging them on the issue. Karen Burke of 606 Shore Road and Kerry Murray of 710 Shore Road urged continued resident involvement; Gaylen Nolan of Allaire Road urged consultation with the Environmental Commission. Administrator John Barrett said the borough will revisit the project in 2026 and handle necessary logistics, and he noted that a broken hydrant resulting from recent storm activity will be replaced through insurance.
The council framed the action as balancing engineering guidance, resident input and fiscal prudence; members said staff will coordinate removal and consider future alternatives if conditions warrant.
