Board approves first readings for employee AI-use and student alcohol/drug-free policies

The board gave first-reading approval to two new policies: an employee-facing acceptable use of artificial intelligence policy intended to protect FERPA-protected information and set standards for approved AI tools, and a student-facing alcohol and drug–free campus policy.
Jim Larson told the board the AI policy is intended for employees only and had been vetted by the college's IT section; because of rapid change in the technology he recommended the policy be reviewed yearly rather than on the college’s normal five-year cycle. "This policy here is created for employees. It is not a student facing policy," Larson said. He emphasized the policy is designed to prevent inappropriate disclosure of personally identifiable or FERPA-covered information.
The proposed alcohol and drug–free campus policy mirrors the earlier employee policy language and fills a gap in the student handbook so the college can enforce standards on the student side. Larson said both items will return for a second reading on Aug. 5, 2026.
The board approved the first readings by voice vote.
