Seaman USD 345 to simplify K–4 report cards with teacher-created "I can" statements

District staff told the board a teacher-led effort will replace long state standard text on grades 2–4 report cards with shorter "I can" success criteria; academic expectations remain unchanged and a sample will be shown at the next meeting.
District administrators updated trustees on a teacher-driven effort to reformat standards-based report cards for grades 2–4 to improve family and student understanding.
Megan (district staff) said teachers have translated state standards into concise "I can" success criteria and focused the report-card display on a subset of "focus standards" each quarter so parents and students see the most relevant learning targets for that grading period. She emphasized that "the academic expectations haven't changed whatsoever. We are still teaching standards in their entirety. We're just trying to assist in that communication process." The report cards will include a key that explains the 1–4 score scale and is being automated through PowerSchool with coding work underway.
Trustees welcomed the change as a communication improvement and asked staff to present a visual sample at the next meeting. Administrators said the project was driven by KISA goals and district strategic priorities and that there is no anticipated cost impact beyond staff time.
