Caney council hires treasurer, approves rezoning and land-bank sale

At its Aug. 5 meeting the Caney City Council appointed Amber Dean as city treasurer in a 4-2 vote after considering two candidates. The motion to hire Dean was moved and seconded and recorded in the agenda minutes.

The council also voted to reduce ward representation to five seats (vote recorded 5-1) and approved two rezoning ordinances: Code 2024-05 rezoning 117 E. 5th Avenue from Residential District to Business, and Code 2024-06 rezoning 815 S. High Street to Commercial Residential. Both rezoning motions passed unanimously (6-0).

Council awarded the land bank bid for the old nursing home to New Image Homes, LLC for $12,500 and approved a second pay request to Horseshoe Construction for $34,646.00. The Aug. 5 consent agenda also lists a larger Appropriations and Payroll Ordinance No. 08/02/2024 totaling $391,130.14 with multiple vendor payments noted in the agenda.

A proposal to open a checking account for the Caney Grocery Store was dropped from the Aug. 5 agenda, and a management checklist for the grocery store was tabled until an Aug. 25 workshop. The council set future meeting dates and adjourned after routine departmental reports.
