Brewster USD 314 board approves amended science teacher role and names assistant volleyball coach

The Brewster Unified School District No. 314 Board of Education met via Zoom on Sept. 2, 2024, and, following executive sessions on student and personnel matters, approved two personnel actions by unanimous votes.
After returning from a personnel executive session at 7:02 p.m., the board voted 6-0 to approve an amended position for Katherine Cunningham, changing her assignment to serve as the 6–8 grades science teacher and as the online monitor for Science 9–11 for the 2024–2025 school year. The motion to approve Cunningham’s amended position was made by Heather McDonald and seconded by Nicolas Schroeder.
The board also voted 6-0 to approve Kirra Moore as the high school assistant volleyball coach for the 2024 season, with the appointment listed as effective Aug. 26, 2024. That motion was made by Heather McDonald and seconded by Kassie Selby.
The meeting began with the Board President calling the special session to order at 6:30 p.m. and establishing a quorum. The board entered two separate executive sessions to discuss confidential student matters under the Kansas Open Meetings Act (KOMA) and one executive session to discuss an individual employee’s performance under the KOMA non-elected personnel exception. The minutes record that “nothing resulted” from the two student-related executive sessions. All recorded executive-session motions carried by a 6-0 vote.
Board members listed as present in the meeting minutes were Heather McDonald; Jance McKee; Mike Palmer; Nicolas Schroeder; Kassie Selby (Vice President); Sarah Starns (Vice President); and BJ Stephens. Superintendent Jessica McCoy and Board Clerk Tarra Baumfalk also were present. The meeting was adjourned at 7:06 p.m.
