Council extends Sandstone townhome project completion to Dec. 31, 2026

The Bonner Springs City Council on April 14 approved a resolution amending the development agreement for the Sandstone Townhome project to extend the completion deadline to Dec. 31, 2026.
Tyler Ellsworth, the city's bond counsel, explained the developer had difficulties securing permanent electrical service, which delayed construction and prevented the developer from meeting the original 12/31/2024 deadline. The developer requested relief in advance; staff recommended and the council approved an amended and restated development agreement that moves the required completion date to Dec. 31, 2026.
Ellsworth also told the council that the developer had earlier asked for authority to sell buildings or individual units to owner-occupants but subsequently withdrew that request; the project will remain entirely rental under the amended agreement. The council adopted the resolution by roll call vote.
What's next: with the extended deadline the developer will continue construction under the amended schedule; staff will monitor progress and report back to council as required under the development agreement.
