Burden police approved to apply for 50/50 federal vest grant to replace aging body armor

Burden Chief of Police Ron Cannon told the City Council on April 28 that current patrol bulletproof vests are nearing the end of their service life and a Department of Justice 50/50 vest grant usually opening in May–June could help cover replacement costs.
Cannon reported the estimated cost for five new vests and exterior carriers is $6,692.39 and that, under the grant’s 50/50 match structure, the city’s share would be about $3,346.19. Taylor Dory moved to allow the Burden Police Department to apply for the grant when it opens; Chase Hobart seconded. The council voted 4-0 to authorize the application.
No purchase was approved at the meeting; the motion authorized staff to submit a grant application once the opportunity opens. If awarded, the city would be responsible for the local match and any procurement requirements associated with the grant.
