Brewster board approves virtual learners to receive Brewster diploma through Smoky Hill ESC

The Brewster Board of Education voted 5-0 on Sept. 16 to permit virtual learners enrolled through the Smoky Hill Educational Service Center to receive a Brewster Unified School District #314 diploma after they meet all district credit requirements.
Heather McDonald moved to approve the arrangement and Mike Palmer seconded the motion. Board members discussed that the virtual learners would not be included in district state testing counts (they are seniors or adults not subject to testing) and would not participate in the district’s graduation walk unless noted; however, they would receive an official Brewster diploma tied to the district once credits are complete.
The board’s approval formalizes the district’s administrative pathway for Smoky Hill ESC virtual learners to earn Brewster diplomas and clarifies how those enrollments are counted in district reports.
