Planning commission recommends rezoning at 13040 Canaan Drive; sends proposal to council

The Bonner Springs Planning Commission unanimously recommended rezoning of 13040 Canaan Drive (case BSRZ0524) after a brief public hearing and discussion. The commission opened the public hearing at 6:34 p.m., accepted questions from attendees and closed the hearing before taking action.

Staff and commissioners said the zoning change will not alter the parcel’s footprint or allow immediate subdivision; one commissioner noted that changing from general commercial to the requested classification could make it harder to split the site into smaller lots or create spot zoning. A member of the public asked whether the site would continue to operate as an auto repair shop and whether the cited number of vehicles (31) reflected for-sale inventory or total vehicles; staff responded during the hearing.

After brief discussion, Commissioner motioned to approve the rezoning request with staff stipulations as written; the motion was seconded and passed 7–0. Chair indicated the planning commission’s recommendation will be forwarded to the City Council for final action at the council’s February meeting.
