Board approves five systemwide transfer courses and removes intermediate algebra from transfer list

The Kansas Board of Regents approved two related actions that change which courses transfer seamlessly across state institutions.
Vice President Rusty Monholland asked the board to recognize five new systemwide transfer courses — Ceramics I, Data Structures, World Literature, Oral Skills I and Oral Skills II — increasing the number of seamlessly transferring courses from 126 to 131 if implemented. “TAC recommends that these five newly developed courses be recognized for transfer across the Kansas Board of Regents system,” Monholland said.
Regent Johnston moved approval; Regent Mendoza seconded and the board approved the recommendation by voice vote.
On a related item, Monholland brought forward staff and Transfer and Articulation Council recommendations to remove MAT 0990 (intermediate algebra) from the systemwide transfer list effective summer 2026. He said the board’s May 2023 gateway course placement policy finds that intermediate algebra is not college level and that students who need additional support will instead enroll in co‑requisite developmental education alongside gateway courses.
Regent Crocker asked whether completion of MAT 0990 at one institution would ensure readiness for college‑level algebra at another; Monholland said co‑requisite remediation is intended to enroll students in the credit‑bearing gateway course while receiving just‑in‑time support and should improve completion outcomes.
Regent Mendoza moved the removal; Regent Perasker seconded and the motion passed by voice vote. Staff said the Transfer and Articulation Council and KBOR staff support the removal as consistent with gateway placement policy.
