At its July 15, 2026 meeting, the Angola Historic Preservation Commission approved a certificate of appropriateness for a new hanging sign for Lake And Linen at 213 West Maumee Street.
Allison, the city staff member presenting the application, told commissioners the proposed metal sign would measure about 3 feet by 1.5 feet, be mounted to a painted wooden board above the entrance (not attached to historic brick masonry) and use an alabaster-and-white color scheme compatible with the downtown historic district. "Staff recommends approval of the proposed hanging sign because it is compatible with the character of the building and complies with the standards and guidelines," Allison said.
Commission chair Lou Anne and other commissioners asked whether an old awning frame had been removed and whether mortar and repairs were in place. Allison said the prior frame had been gone for more than a year and the proposed mounting minimizes impact to brick and mortar. Lou Anne praised the design: "I like those kind of signs," she said, adding she thought the shingle-style hanger would work well for the storefront.
Lou Anne moved to approve the project; members seconded and the commission called for ayes. The motion passed. The transcript records verbal assent and the commission chair declaring the motion passed; no roll-call tally with individual votes was recorded in the transcript.
Allison outlined next steps after the commission approval: staff will forward the approved materials to permitting and a sign permit will be issued. "Once it's approved here, we will send it to permitting... and then she'll do a sign permit for you, and then you'll be ready to hang," Allison said. Lou Anne noted the applicant plans a ribbon cutting at noon and a public grand opening from 4 to 7 p.m.
The commission proceeded to other agenda items and adjourned; the next meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, Aug. 19 at 4:30 p.m.
