Carbondale council taps street reserve to cover $57,657 project overrun; approves repairs and vendor payments

The Carbondale City Council on Nov. 4 approved several payments and a transfer from the city's street reserve after the recent street project exceeded its budget.
Maintenance Supervisor Dustin Bretsnyder told the council the project finished about $57,657.66 over budget. Councilmember Kevin Seals moved to pay an overage bill of $14,022 to Killough Construction from the street reserve; Chad Moore seconded the motion and it carried. The council also approved $10,252.42 to Bettis Asphalt (motion by Kaitlyn Ball, second Moore) and $4,232 to United Rental (motion by K. Seals, second Moore).
Bretsnyder said Alcove had paid the city $5,000 to help with repairs caused by heavy trucks. Councilmembers said the streets look improved and praised Killough Construction's work but discussed limiting future street work in combined projects if bids approach budget amounts.
Council also approved a $1,594.90 repair to the maintenance building's overhead door (motion by Ball, second Seals). The meeting record shows motions carried for each payment and repair; no recorded roll-call tallies were provided in the minutes.
Other maintenance notes included replacement of both batteries on a city truck, discussion of tree trimming behind Casey's, and plans to extend the East Lake dock by 12 feet. The park's merry-go-round remains out of commission pending a bearing replacement; staff said they will fence the equipment if ground conditions prevent retrieval.
The council's vote to cover the overrun drew on the street reserve account rather than an immediate tax or bond action; officials did not present a revised project budget at the meeting. The council adjourned at 8:23 p.m.
