Transylvania County approves $100,000 in nonprofit awards for FY2027

Transylvania County’s Board of Commissioners approved the FY2027 nonprofit funding package on June 22, 2026, awarding $100,000 among 30 applicants. Budget and Management Analyst Jennifer Wright described reforms to the application process (online submission, a $20,000 designated housing allocation, emphasis on direct services, and an evaluation rubric).
Recommended awards included funding for Blue Ridge Community Health Services for dental services; Bread of Life for hot meals; the Boys & Girls Club Teen Night; Haven of Transylvania County; Housing Assistance Corporation (an initial $10,000 with $10,000 held in reserve pending a mid‑year report); Meals on Wheels; TC STRONG teen mental health programs; Transylvania Christian Ministry’s Wheels to Work; and the Transylvania County Schools Educational Foundation Backpack Buddies program. Cultural and recreation awards included support for the Heritage Museum, Historical Society, Mountain School of Strings, and the Transylvania Farmers Market.
The Board also directed that the additional $10,000 designated housing funds for Housing Assistance Corporation return to the Board for approval when requested and noted that nonprofits must execute contracts and provide reporting on fund use. Commissioner Jason Chappell moved to approve the nonprofit funding contracts; Commissioner Chase McKelvey seconded the motion and it was approved unanimously.
