Danvers library board approves treasurer’s report, hears HVAC and budget concerns

The Peabody Institute of Danvers Board of Library Trustees unanimously approved the treasurer’s report at its May 20 meeting, adopting a statement showing an ending balance of $734,845.15.
Former Treasurer Cory Ryan presented the report, listing a beginning balance of $696,737.13, income of $1,088.94, expenses of $1,737.06 and a change in value of $38,756.14 that produced the reported ending balance. A motion to approve the report was made by Kenneth Yoon Lee, seconded by Cory Ryan, and passed unanimously.
Director Noelle Boc updated trustees on operational issues. She said the library’s second and third floors became "unbearably hot" at the end of April; ATCO inspected the HVAC system but advised that no corrective action was possible until the seasonal changeover from heat to air conditioning. Boc also reported that the library received its second state aid disbursement for FY2026 totaling $37,861.71 and that budget trends across the state warrant vigilance.
Boc told trustees she had presented the budget to the Finance Committee on April 15 and noted committee questions about Archival Center hours and possible renovation options. She warned that if neighboring Marblehead were to lose certification, the library’s policy would require it to stop serving Marblehead residents—an outcome that could affect service patterns and revenue-sharing arrangements.
On programs and outreach, Boc said a Healthy Relationships program planned with Amanda Lane of HAWC was postponed due to low registration and will be retooled for the fall. The library is participating in the Rev250 library crawl, and the Girl Scouts’ pollinator garden grand opening is set for June 1 at 4:00 p.m. Boc also said the Assistant Head of Reference and Information Services position has been posted internally, with interviews to follow and a hoped-for early-June start for a selected internal candidate.
Trustees asked questions about the budget and what the board can do to assist; the Finance Committee will continue its work on the library budget and trustees said they would monitor state-level developments that could influence local funding and service agreements.
