The Unified School District No. 286 Board of Education met Nov. 11, 2024, at the district office. President Jaime Morris called the meeting to order at 6:30 p.m.; all seven board members were present.
Board member Michael Clark made a motion "to approve the agenda as presented," which Denise Signer seconded. The board approved the agenda 7-0. Rodney Dickens moved to approve the organizational items on the consent agenda — including routine monthly approvals and personnel actions — and P.J. Buck seconded; that motion also passed 7-0.
The consent agenda listed, among other routine items, the employment of Tracy Sweaney as High School Assistant Boys Basketball Coach. The personnel action was included in the approved consent items.
Superintendent Rusty Arnold reported on building maintenance and district scheduling. Arnold said the elementary roof is leaking at screw holes and "suggested getting a bid from Barney Castello to get it fixed." He also praised Allen Coate for his contributions to the district, reviewed the high school basketball practice schedule and presented a proposal from Coach Thomas on Junior High Cheer.
Arnold briefed the board on ACT testing and answered a question from board member Jonathan Cude about the testing process and whether it could be accelerated. Arnold said there is "a possibility of the entire state doing away with state testing for high school students," a development he said would affect future local testing plans.
John Gray, the district's PreK–5 elementary principal, presented a slideshow highlighting staff, the teacher and student of the month awards, recent field trips including a freedom walk, and student house engagement activities and community events.
Karla Cherico, 6–12 MS/HS principal, reported on junior and senior high programs and events and presented an updated transportation report; she noted that the district has experienced deer-related accidents affecting routes.
No items were listed under old or new business. Michael Clark moved to adjourn; P.J. Buck seconded and the motion passed 7-0. The meeting adjourned at 7:08 p.m. The board scheduled its next regular meeting for Dec. 9, 2024, at 6:30 p.m. in the district office.
Actions recorded in the minutes were limited to routine approvals: agenda approval (motion by Michael Clark; second Denise Signer; passed 7-0), approval of the consent agenda (motion by Rodney Dickens; second P.J. Buck; passed 7-0) which included the hire of Tracy Sweaney as High School Assistant Boys Basketball Coach, and a motion to adjourn (motion by Michael Clark; second P.J. Buck; passed 7-0).
