Hazel Stevenson elected select board chair as board swears in new members

The Town of Wayne Select Board opened its meeting by swearing in new and returning members and then moved promptly to choose officers for the coming year. Henry Steck read the oath and new members took office; Tom Moran nominated Hazel Stevenson as chair and the motion carried unanimously. Stevenson then accepted and ran the remainder of the meeting; the board elected Tom Moran vice chair.
The introductions that followed gave members a snapshot of experience on the board: Henry Steck said he had served on the select board and had a long career in contracting and law; Tom Moran described his professional background in life sciences; and Hazel Stevenson described a background in state-level IT and procurement. Steve Saunders and Laura (Lauren) Mateoer also introduced themselves.
The board handled routine business immediately after elections: it approved the June 30 meeting minutes, voted to approve payroll number 1 for $12,612.88, and accepted two donations — $2,331.80 for LADREC programming and a $100 donation for a home-support program.
The board chair announced that more complex items would follow on the agenda, including a consultant presentation on flood vulnerability and an update from the Wayne Local School Committee.
The board adjourned after a full agenda of presentations, public comment and financial updates. The next procedural step for officers will be to follow up on items assigned to staff or committees at the next regular meeting.
