Scotia-Glenville superintendent announces retirement, board begins search planning

Susan Schwartz, superintendent of the SCOTIA-GLENVILLE CENTRAL SCHOOL DISTRICT, told the board on July 13 that she plans to retire effective June 30, 2027 and described her decision as voluntary after a 40+-year career in public education.
"No one is forcing me out," Schwartz said, adding that while the announcement came earlier than the six months typically expected, she is committed to working with the board through a planned transition. Schwartz outlined upcoming leadership changes and hires, naming incoming business official Christy Ferri and PPS director Danielle Schneibert, and said the district will recruit for other central-office positions over the coming year.
The board discussed options for conducting a superintendent search, including using BOCES services or hiring a private search firm. A board member said the district should compare private firms and BOCES to determine the best approach and begin community engagement early. Hal Talbot, who was elected board president during the organizational portion of the meeting, said the board wants robust community input and noted the process can take six to nine months in other districts.
District leaders said they plan a retreat and to place the search process on upcoming agendas so the board can decide whether the search will be open or closed and whether residency in the district will be required in the contract. Schwartz said staff will gather options and firm names for the board to consider at the retreat.
The board formally accepted Schwartz’s retirement/resignation for the purpose of retirement on a voice vote later in the meeting; the motion recorded the effective date as June 30, 2027.
