Commission approves $750,000 EDAC allocation for Don Guthrie Sports Complex infrastructure

Community volunteers and project leaders outlined a multi-phase plan that includes turfing infields and outfields, improved drainage, new fencing and lighting, scoreboards, bleachers and dugouts. Presenters said the full project ranges from about $9 million at current estimates, with roughly $2.5 million needed for infrastructure. They reported donor commitments of more than $6 million toward turf and related work and described an ambition to host travel tournaments that would bring visitors and lodging revenue to the city.
Blaze of Mammoth (design/construction partner) told commissioners the firm had value-engineered the package and identified mobilization discounts if multiple fields are done together, and that turf warranties generally run eight years while typical life is often 12 to 15 years. Project leaders said a maintenance plan and minimal annual contractor maintenance are part of the package, and they discussed options for sponsorship revenue and tournament fees to support future maintenance.
EDAC representatives said they evaluated project ROI and recommended the $750,000 allocation unanimously. Commissioners asked detailed questions about road and parking improvements, coordination of infrastructure work with turf installation, and whether the EDAC fund balance would still support future projects; EDAC staff said the fund balance can sustain this allocation without precluding foreseeable investments.
A motion to approve was moved, seconded and approved by voice vote. Presenters thanked commissioners and volunteers; staff will coordinate design, permitting and scheduling so turf and infrastructure work can begin on the proposed timeline.
The commission recorded no amendments to the allocation during the meeting and directed staff to continue coordination with donors, Mammoth and city departments on project timing and maintenance planning.
