Treynor elementary to launch CHAMPS behavior framework; school sets new cell-phone and AI guidance

The Treynor Community School District will introduce a building-wide CHAMPS behavior framework at the elementary school and implement updated classroom technology rules ahead of the 2025–26 year, district staff told the board at its Aug. 11 meeting.
Jill Kay presented the elementary report describing the CHAMPS rollout, aimed at consistent expectations and smoother transitions across classrooms; professional development to train staff is scheduled Aug. 19 and will be led by building leaders who attended a June training in Des Moines. The program is intended to align behavior expectations districtwide and reduce disruptions when students move between classes.
Mr. Nickerson, in the MS/HS report, said enrollment increased from 468 last year and described operational policy changes tied to state requirements: students will not be allowed to use cell phones during instructional time; staff will use pocket charts and teachers will permit phone use during lunch and passing periods at the high school. Nickerson also said the district will teach responsible, academic uses of artificial intelligence and integrate guidance into curriculum while blocking unrestricted access to AI tools.
Board members did not take formal action on policy language during the meeting; the 500 series (501 and 502) policies were reviewed in a first reading, with administration asked to clarify specific kindergarten admission language in 501.4 and to consider eliminating redundant language in 501.10 before a second reading.
