Mayor Jennifer Jones and the commission approved applying for a permit to close Main Street downtown between Locust Fork and Mulberry Street on Dec. 13 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. for the Christmas Market.
The commission also confirmed the parade route will proceed north beginning at Edgewood Drive and ending at Commonwealth Drive, per the previously approved encroachment permit. Channing Meadows and Sarah Maggard are organizing the event and reported roughly 40 vendors had signed up.
Commissioner Dale Perry moved and Mayor Jones seconded a motion to allow Santa to set up in City Hall and have City Hall open to the public during the market; the motion passed 4-0. A citizen had earlier raised concerns about a two-hour road closure for Trick-or-Treat, saying it would block access for many residents; commissioners discussed traffic impacts and Chief John Giles said he had spoken with a county contact about potential traffic issues.
The commission also discussed the logistics of vendor sign-in and a vendor sign-in sheet at City Hall was referenced in the minutes. The closure application will be submitted by the City Clerk and Public Works for permitting.
