Groton beautification committee schedules September work parties, plans award for Mystic Marina

The Groton Beautification Committee agreed to concentrate on several town planting and cleanup efforts this fall, scheduling a September work party to prepare beds and plant five striped yucca if the plants can be sourced.

Committee members discussed a proposed beautification award for Mystic/Mystic River Marina at Willow Point and the practical steps for presenting it, including printing certificates and taking publicity photos. Committee member (S2) said the marina staff “were thrilled” to learn of the recognition and described the marina as having extensive plantings along Essex Street and Willow Point. Chair (S1) said she would contact Lisa to arrange printing and asked members to attend the presentation when a date is set.

Members emphasized keeping designs low‑maintenance so town crews can manage routine upkeep. Committee member (S4) warned that raised planting beds increase maintenance because mowers cannot reach, and recommended flat stone edging or concrete flats that are easier for the mower to cross. The committee discussed sources and pricing for plants: committee members reported nursery availability problems for heuchera and yucca and noted price differences between wholesale and retail suppliers. S4 said the group would need about five yucca for the site if they can be acquired.

The committee reviewed permissions and safety steps for site work: Chair (S1) said the project had received approval dated 01/17 but that the district vegetation management specialist must be notified 48 hours before starting site work, and members agreed to confirm any required utility locates (“call before you dig”) with Public Works. Volunteers and possible donated labor (a retired mason and local contractors) were discussed as options to reduce costs. S1 said the committee has unspent budget funds and will check available amounts before committing to purchases.

Next steps: the committee will attempt to scout sites with Mark and town contacts, collect quotes or volunteer commitments for stone edging, attempt to secure five striped yucca, and reconvene with a project plan and dates at the next meeting. The group also agreed to document garden ownership and maintenance responsibilities and to circulate an updated garden list by email.
