Council discusses park safety: emergency call boxes, signage, Wi‑Fi and maintenance

Council members and staff spent a substantial portion of the meeting discussing park safety and operations, including resident requests for emergency call boxes, signage needs, maintenance and the possible need for defibrillators at sporting events.

Council member (S3) reported that several residents asked the town to install emergency phones that would dial 911 directly at two park/community center sites and said the equipment “is not that expensive.” Council member (S4) asked whether signage explaining how the units operate had been ordered; staff reported a sample sign from another town had been provided to the town manager for ordering.

Members discussed practical matters: ensuring signs explain operation and hours, ways to prevent misuse by children, and whether Wi‑Fi and remote camera monitoring should be added so staff could check security feeds. Staff confirmed a local contractor (Bailey Childers) is handling cleaning and maintenance; council members praised the current cleanliness but asked staff to follow up on equipment repairs and vendor service for occasional malfunctions.

Council member (S6) raised that recently enacted legislation may require defibrillators at sporting events and complexes beginning in 2028; members said they would review whether town facilities used for tournaments (for example pickleball courts) could trigger that requirement and whether the town would need to purchase units.
