Randolph County approves Camp Pioneer $60,000, software upgrade and multiple local funding requests

The Randolph County Commission approved a series of funding requests and grant actions at its July 2 meeting, including $60,000 for Camp Pioneer, a software upgrade for the prosecuting attorney, and multiple smaller awards for community events.
Tracy Walker, president of Camp Pioneer and the county park and recreation board, asked for $60,000 to cover Camp Pioneer utility expenses for fiscal year 2026–27. The commission approved the request and directed payment from Hotel/Motel Tax funds in monthly increments of $5,000.
The Prosecuting Attorney’s Office requested a $20,800 upgrade to a case-management portal (Karpel software). Commissioners said the current system is approximately 25–30 years old and that a modern portal would allow cross-county checks on case histories. Commissioner Siler moved to approve the purchase from Opioid Settlement funds; the motion passed unanimously.
Chrissy Harper, representing the Randolph County Fair, requested support to help keep gate fees low and to support fair programming; the commission approved $3,000 from the county budget and $3,000 from Hotel/Motel Tax funds for a total of $6,000.
Other approvals included a $2,500 Hotel/Motel Tax contribution for the Harman Volunteer Fire Department’s Fourth of July celebration; a Courthouse-lawn use request for the Mountain State Forest Festival; approval of the 2026 United for Kids hygiene drive collection box in the courthouse; and an ABCA letter of support for an Elkins Flea Market event slated for July 18. County Clerk Brenda Wiseman received approval to apply for a HAVA security sub-grant to buy e-poll books for all 27 precincts so poll workers can use them on election day.
Melinda Boggs, Victim Service Coordinator for the Prosecuting Attorney’s Office, reported submitting the FY27 VOCA application seeking $59,430 with a cash match of $14,862 (total $74,292); the commission ratified the signature on the application.
Commissioners also approved eight final settlements, a State Budget Revision restoring an $110,000 contribution to EMS out of Courthouse contractual funds, erroneous assessments, fire fee adjustments, EMS fee adjustments, payment of the bills, and adjourned the meeting.
