Fresno County certifies June 2 primary results; clerk warns of tabulation scale ahead of November

The Fresno County Board of Supervisors unanimously certified the results of the June 2, 2026 consolidated statewide primary on July 14 after receiving a report from County Clerk and Registrar James Coos.
Coos told the board the department completed a full count and provided certified results to the California Secretary of State. He reported about 184,000 ballots were cast across the county — roughly a 35% turnout — and said the governor’s race created longer ballots in some vote centers that required additional tabulation time and led to two‑card ballots for some voters.
Coos said the office conducted manual tally processes on a percentage of ballots, expanded the manual review to more than 3% in response to ballot complexity, and found tabulators to be reliable (no tabulator error in the manual tally; one human error required rescanning). He also noted the county will continue to manage post‑election work, including a potential manual recount in the governor’s contest if a requester pays required deposits.
Board members congratulated recent winners and thanked Coos and elections staff. Coos warned that November could require expanded tabulation capacity if turnout rises and the county will take lessons learned from the June process to prepare.
