Lee County board to seek state funds to replace middle-school roof and renovate high-school HVAC

On July 13 the Lee County Board of Education voted 4–0 to authorize applications to the Georgia Department of Education for state entitlement funding to replace the roof at Lee County Middle School East and to renovate the HVAC system at Lee County High School.
Superintendent Dr. Truett told the board these projects were included in the district's five‑year facility plan and are eligible for state funds. She noted the district must apply for each project and that state entitlement reimbursements historically represent a relatively small share of total project costs. As an example, she cited a prior gym project: an estimated $14,000,000 total cost with $1,400,000 provided by the state, and she said a ballpark estimate for the high-school HVAC work is about $5,500,000.
Dr. Truett said the SPLOST proposal that would have funded these projects was defeated in May, and that the district will need to proceed using general funds while seeking state reimbursement where eligible. A board motion to approve the application process was made, seconded, and passed by unanimous voice vote.
The board did not vote on project contracts or schedules at the public meeting; the action recorded was authorization to file the required state applications.
