Brian, the transportation presenter, said drivers now use tablets for turn-by-turn routing and families can view real-time route information through a parent app. He added that Safety Pass technology gives the district data on when students board and exit buses, improving assignment accuracy and route planning.
Brian provided several operational details: the district operates 47 buses with an average fleet age of about 10 years and average mileage near 166,000. Staffing and in-house maintenance help keep costs down; transportation mechanics complete most repairs except full engine or transmission rebuilds. "As of last week, we have received 6 of the new buses on the yard," Brian said.
On route efficiency, he said the preliminary review identified one route that can be absorbed into another, saving roughly 50 miles per day and an estimated $5,000–$6,000 per year. The department is conducting route optimization, driver refresher training, and Safety Pass readiness work through the summer and will continue daily coordination with communications and planning staff.
No board action was taken; staff requested continuing authority to finalize routing and staffing for the fall.
