Union City authorizes CDBG application for Municipal Lot #1 stormwater repairs after sinkhole discovery

Streets Supervisor Bob Phillips reported he and Borough Manager Cindy Wells met with Solicitor Tim Wachter about sinkholes in Municipal Lot #1 and that Mansfield would fill the sinkhole, replace about 10 feet of pipe and install a new catch basin. Phillips said smoke-and-dye testing will be performed after that work is completed. The borough is awaiting quotes from JT Patching and Paving and Cross Paving to pave the affected area and the catch-basin vicinity.
Council then approved submitting an application to the county for up to $100,000 in CDBG funds to cover a portion of stormwater repairs in Municipal Lot #1. Councilor Steadman moved and Councilor Osborn seconded the motion, which carried unanimously. The borough noted that business owners in the area and the Union City Volunteer Fire Department will be notified before smoke testing is scheduled.
Next steps include obtaining paving quotes, completing the pipe-and-catch-basin work, scheduling smoke-and-dye testing, and submitting the CDBG application; the application does not guarantee funding.
