At its March 12 work session the Hastings Public Schools Board of Education handled several administrative items including policy review, procurement previews and personnel updates.
Policy 4032 (Professional Growth) was discussed by Superintendent Dr. Christopher Prososki and Director Kristen Slechta and tabled for additional study; no action will be taken this month. Prososki also reviewed proposed Policy 4041 (Staff Dress and Appearance) and said he will recommend approval of the district's current dress‑code policy at the regular meeting.
On procurement items, Prososki reviewed custodial supply bids and said Carpenter Paper was the only vendor with a total above $20,000; he will recommend approval of the Carpenter Paper bid in the amount of $37,370.36. Prososki also reviewed bids for video boards associated with a COPS grant and said board members requested additional information including a full list of bids received.
Director of HR and Operations Dr. Thomas Szlanda reported unfilled positions across the district — 12 certificated, 7 classified and 17 extra‑standard openings — and reminded members of the March 15 resignation deadline for certificated staff. During the public comment opportunity Ben Welsch, president of the Hastings Education Association, addressed the board (the transcript excerpt does not include the content of his remarks).
The board approved a motion to excuse Member Andrew McCarty from the meeting (moved by Sharon Brooks, seconded by Jodi Graves) by roll call vote 8–0. Later, the board voted to enter closed session (moved by Jodi Graves, seconded by Sharon Brooks) at 7:42 p.m.; roll call passed 8–0. The board returned to open session at 8:15 p.m., with President Becky Sullivan verifying that discussion in closed session was confined to personnel issues and that no action was taken. The meeting adjourned at 8:16 p.m. after an 8–0 vote on the motion to adjourn (moved by Tamisha Rose Osgood, seconded by Stacie Widhelm).
