The Hughson City Council voted 5-0 to approve the design and placement of a memorial sign for Danae Madrigal in Euclid Park and directed staff to assist with placement when installation occurs.
Staff told the council the item had previously been before the body and that a council member provided alternative designs to staff. "We're just looking for approval from council to to have it be put into our city park," staff said, describing the request as approval of design and location while deferring any funding decision to a later time.
Members of the Madrigal and Arroyo families attended and several audience speakers described the memorial. One speaker noted the artist (Forever in Stone) is donating the artwork and that the only family cost would be the slab and sandstone border. Council members discussed a QR code on the sign; staff indicated the code could link to pictures and a short summary about the honoree.
City staff said the family and private donations were expected to cover construction costs and that if the family later requested city funding that would be brought back to council. Staff also said public works would coordinate placement and provide assistance when needed.
The council formalized approval by motion and carried it by a 5-0 vote. The financial mechanism for installation remains to be reported back to the council if city funds are requested.
