Council approves leases and other ordinances, and funds pickleball court renovation

Kershaw County Council approved several agenda items on third reading tonight, including a special-source revenue credit agreement for Candiru Lodge Holdings LLC (Project Gemstone) and leases for county property at 632 West Dekalb Street related to the Department of Natural Resources and the South Carolina Forestry Commission. One council member recused from a Forestry Commission lease vote due to a family connection; the remainder approved the measures.
Separately, staff presented a $249,000 contract with Sports Court at Carolina Inc. to convert courts at KC West into pickleball courts. Council voted unanimously among present members to authorize the contract. Council members said the conversion and a private donation anticipated to cover additional conversions will increase recreational opportunities and generate higher use of county park space.
Several calendar and administrative items were also handled: the July 28 meeting was canceled because a quorum of council members will attend the South Carolina Association of Counties conference; a reappointment to the Clean Community Commission was approved; and council authorized executive-session discussions on contract negotiations and pending legal matters.
