The Clifton Town Council agreed Dec. 7 to investigate the feasibility of a sidewalk connecting Clifton Creek Drive to the railroad tracks and to contact Fairfax County Department of Transportation about process and construction requirements.
Resident Marilyn Stoney, in an emailed public comment included in the meeting packet, urged the Council to act, saying she has repeatedly asked for the sidewalk and that recent events have intensified her concern. "I am terrified every time I walk into town. TERRIFIED," Stoney wrote and offered her time and expertise to assist the Town's efforts. Another nearby resident, Teresa (Terry) Whalen, wrote that a sidewalk would "greatly improve the safety of all pedestrians" and would complement the town walking trail.
Vice Mayor Regan McDonald told the Council the Town needs to determine which agency would handle construction and what permits would be required; the Council agreed to contact Fairfax County DOT. The Council designated Vice Mayor McDonald as the Town's representative on the project and accepted Stoney's offer of assistance.
The Council did not adopt funding or a construction timetable at the Dec. 7 meeting. The Town will report back after discussions with Fairfax County DOT about technical requirements, right-of-way issues and potential costs. No formal vote or appropriation for construction was made at this meeting.
