Council votes 7–2 to place immigrant-support resolution on Nov. 17 agenda

Alder Shafer (speaker S9) moved on Nov. 10 to place a proposed resolution supporting immigrant communities on the City of Monroe Common Council’s Nov. 17 agenda. The motion was seconded and the council voted 7–2 to add the item for debate and potential action at the next meeting.
Shafer told colleagues the resolution was drafted with input from community members and framed the request as placing the matter on the agenda for debate rather than adopting language at this meeting. "I would encourage everybody to vote in favour of bringing this up for debate at the next council meeting on the 17th," Shafer said.
Clerk Wall recorded the roll call. Two members, Alder Toman and Alder Cleveland, were recorded as voting no; the clerk counted the final tally as 7 to 2 in favor of placing the resolution on the Nov. 17 agenda. No substantive debate on the resolution language occurred at the Nov. 10 meeting because the matter was only scheduled for the subsequent meeting.
What happens next: the resolution will be posted on the Nov. 17 agenda and subject to council debate and any public comment; council members indicated they will have an opportunity to review and suggest changes to the draft before the next meeting.
