Clifton council moves forward with ordinance to shift town elections to November

The Clifton Town Council voted Sept. 7 to approve advertising a proposed ordinance to move Town elections to the November general-election date in even-numbered years.
Mayor Bill Hollaway moved to approve the proposed amendment to the town code to align elections with the state November general-election schedule; the motion was approved by poll, 6-0. The council also approved a motion to schedule a public hearing at the October meeting, if a hearing is required.
The proposed amendment, prepared under the authority of Virginia Code §15.2-1400, would move mayoral and council terms elected in May 2020 to a November 2022 election and thereafter continue biennially in November, with new terms beginning Jan. 1 following the election. The ordinance text included transitional language specifying that officials elected under prior May elections would continue until their successors are elected in November and qualified to serve.
Council discussion also included an item on political sign requirements under the town ordinance; no action was taken on signs at this meeting. The council took no immediate action to change the budget cycle tied to the election-cycle change; that item remains for future consideration.
