Mebane awards $717,700 contract to replace GKN pump station force main

Mebane officials said the city moved forward with a wastewater infrastructure upgrade in April, awarding a construction contract to replace a force main that serves the GKN pump station.
Richard reported that five bids were received on Feb. 27, 2026, for a project to install a new 10‑inch ductile iron sanitary force main (Forest Main). The lowest responsive bidder was North State Water and Sewer Inc., with a base bid of $717,700. City council voted 5–0 to award the construction contract to the low bidder.
City materials described the existing GKN pump station force main as a 6‑inch line more than 40 years old whose reduced capacity has constrained support for planned development. The replacement with a larger 10‑inch force main will maintain the current discharge location while increasing capacity and preparing the system for a future pump station replacement, Richard said.
Officials said the contract award addresses an immediate capacity need while allowing the city to continue broader planning work for the pump station area. The council did not provide a construction schedule in the update.
