Commission discusses land-acknowledgment and sister-city ties with Northern Arapaho

Mary Cartwright raised the idea after attending the Sand Creek massacre site and learning about other municipalities’ sister‑city or tribal-exchange arrangements. Commissioners discussed two related tracks: (1) drafting a land-acknowledgment and (2) pursuing a government-to-government relationship or sister-city-style exchange with Wind River-area tribal entities. Several members emphasized that any acknowledgment should not be unilateral and must involve consultation with tribal leaders on wording and activities.
Commissioners suggested staff reach out to previously identified tribal relations contacts and recommended involving a council member or two to begin formal conversations. They also noted opportunities beyond ceremonial language—such as educational exchanges, language or plant access programs, and classroom materials—if a relationship develops.
