Parlier’s City Council voted on July 16 to waive rental fees for an Alcoholics Anonymous celebration event after discussion about city budget pressures and equitable application of fee waivers.
Council members debated whether a full waiver was appropriate given a reported $1,500 rental cost and the city’s larger budget deficits. Several residents urged support for recovery programs and said the financial impact on the city was small relative to the community benefit. Council member Sabrina Rodriguez moved to approve Item 3; a second was recorded and the roll call vote returned three ayes (Mayor Pro Tem Rodriguez, Mayor Alma Beltran, Council member Kathy Solorio) and the motion carried. The council also consolidated other agenda items (1, 2, 4, 5 and 8) onto the consent calendar for a combined approval.
Council discussion emphasized the need for consistent criteria on fee waivers and for ensuring events have proper insurance and staffing. Staff was directed to return with consistent application documentation and fee‑waiver guidance for future requests.
