Wellington adopts PROS master plan, endorses community center feasibility study

The Wellington Board of Trustees unanimously adopted Resolution No. 24-2026 to adopt the 2025–26 Parks, Recreation, Open Spaces and Trails (PROS) master plan and a community center feasibility study.

Eric Khentchell, parks and recreation operations supervisor, summarized the plan’s findings: Wellington’s park system performs well but has service and access gaps, trail connectivity issues and uneven distribution of amenities. The plan identifies a potential community center concept that could expand indoor recreation, gathering and library space, and lists implementation actions and standards to guide capital planning over the next 5–10 years. Khentchell and staff emphasized the plan was developed through technical analysis, stakeholder engagement and public outreach; he thanked Berry Dunn for consulting support and PROS board members and residents for input.

PROS board member Sarah Brown spoke in support during public comment, urging continued community engagement to implement the plan’s vision. Trustees praised the plan’s comprehensive process, linked the plan to economic-development and quality‑of‑life goals, and noted its use in the 2027 budget and CIP. With a motion and second, the board adopted the resolution by roll call vote.

Next steps include incorporating the plan into staffing work plans, developing a 5–10 year capital improvement program beginning in the 2027 budget process, drafting park and trail design standards, and pursuing grants and partnerships to support implementation.
