Lincoln County board calls special election to fill District 3 vacancy after resignation

The Lincoln County Board of Commissioners on July 14 adopted a resolution asking the Lincoln County Board of Elections and Registration to call a special election on Nov. 3, 2026, to fill the District 3 vacancy created by the June 15 resignation of H. Cooper Clyde.
Director Dawson presented the resolution, which the board suspended the full reading of and approved by voice vote. The resolution, as described in the meeting, requests that the election be held in conjunction with the general election on Nov. 3 and allows for a runoff in December if required.
Chair said the law governing vacancies in the county board, enacted in 1949 when the board was created, calls for the chief judge to appoint a replacement until the next election after receiving recommendations from the board majority. The chair also noted that Commissioner Bocksdale has been sworn in and completed orientation and that a formal recommendation to the chief judge normally comes from the board majority.
The resolution adopted instructs the elections office to set the special election date and transmit required materials. No additional timetable for candidate filing or a temporary appointment beyond those remarks was provided in the meeting.
The board did not take further action on candidate selection during the meeting; the special election timeline will be set by the Board of Elections and Registration.
