Commissioners say Planning Commission change enabled emergency plan that helped Tyrone residents

At its July 16 meeting the Blair County Board of Commissioners credited county emergency management and recent Planning Commission changes with allowing a timely response to a recent emergency that affected Tyrone residents. Commissioner (speaker 3) said the board’s decision to change the Planning Commission’s membership enabled that panel to appoint a new director and approve an emergency plan in May that had been overdue for more than a year.
"If that had not happened there would have been no help for the people of Tyrone and anybody else within the county that would need any help in emergency situations," Commissioner said, arguing the membership change was necessary to remove the obstacle to approving the plan. The commissioner praised the emergency-management team and volunteers for coordinating relief and sign-ups in Tyrone.
Chair (speaker 1) echoed the praise and described “a month and a half or more of” planning meetings that involved local law enforcement, fire departments, municipalities and Homeland Security, calling the multiagency response “one big team.” He thanked emergency command staff — mentioning Chris and Emily by given name — and said their on-site coordination prevented further problems as the incident unfolded.
No formal board action was taken on the Planning Commission itself during the July 16 meeting; the remarks occurred during the commissioners’ comment period. The board set its next regular meeting for July 23, 2026.
