Library hears timeline for solar array: company may start in one to two months, expect operations in 2027

The Urbana Free Library board received an update July 14 on plans for an on-site solar array and an estimated timeline for construction and operation.
Donna (introduced during the meeting as a library staff member) said she and building operations manager James Porter met with a representative of the company planning the array. "They are likely to be in construction in the next month or 2," Donna said. The company told staff it typically takes 12 to 18 months to build and make a site operational and estimated the array could be operational by summer or early fall of 2027.
Board members were told the library is awaiting an updated financial analysis from the company to understand potential cost savings and the business terms. The company indicated typical contractual commitments range from about 10 to 20 years if the library chooses to move forward.
No contract was approved at the meeting; staff said the next step is to review the company’s updated financial analysis before the board considers formal approval of any agreement.
