The town council approved a sign‑location request from the Presbyterian Heritage Center to place a series of informational signs along a roughly nine‑tenths‑of‑a‑mile stretch from the gate to the lake.
Commissioner Whitmer described the Montreat History Trail as an initial set of up to 12 signs, each with a photo, short description and a QR code linking to expanded materials on the PHC website. The trail will identify historic buildings and events at sites such as the livery stable near Shenandoah and Assembly; a site map and engineering drawings for pedestals were included in the council packet. The council approved the locations by voice vote; Whitmer said the project is funded by a PHC grant and private money.
Staff noted that the council previously amended the sign ordinance to allow informational signs in rights of way and that the council requested final approval of sign locations. The PHC offered to provide a Zoom link and GPS coordinates for commissioners who want additional detail before installation.
Implementation will proceed with site selections and coordination with staff and engineers.
